Magazine publishing is still one of the fastest growing industries in the country. More people get into this business, as it becomes a more popular way to get news and information. Magazines are available to fill just about every niche, and you can start your own, too. Here are some ways to begin a magazine without having to put up with a lot of headaches in the process.

1. Find your market

There are a lot of magazines out there, and many of them may look as though they already address your audience. So you’re going to have to take a close look and find a market that’s not already addressed. Research your readers not just for their demographic makeup, but to determine what they want to see in magazine articles, too. Are there particular products you know are lacking in your particular market and that you know you could provide? If possible, do some market research and find people that you can feature in your magazine that other people will be interested in reading about.

2. Find a columnist with name recognition

Now, it may not be true that a famous columnist is going to want to write for a little start-up magazine (after all, it’s not likely that you’re going to be able to pay big bucks to that columnist, at least at first). However, it just may be that this columnist is willing to give you, a newbie magazine publisher, a break. If you can find somebody who’s an expert in his or her field and can give your magazine a good kick in the butt its first issue out, try giving them a call and seeing if they’ll do a column for you. You may just have some success.

3. Content is king

Bottom line, if you don’t have good content, you don’t have anything. You can have all the name recognition you want with the particular columnist you choose, you can have good products to sell in your ads, but if you don’t have good content in the rest of your magazine, you’re going to fail.

Typically, an academic publisher will ask you to sign an agreement transferring “all rights” in your article or book that are derived from your dissertation, including electronic rights. Unless you receive specific permission from the publisher to have your dissertation remain freely available over the Internet, such an agreement once signed will require you to take action to make it electronically inaccessible outside of Penn State. Read your publishing contract carefully, consult your advisor if you have any questions about it, and seek answers from the publisher on any matters that remain unclear to you. This is a legal document that, once signed by both parties, imposes certain liabilities and responsibilities on you that are fully enforceable in a court of law, and it behooves you to understand what action or inaction of yours could lead to a violation of the contract and the legal consequences ensuing therefrom.

Are magazines really dying? We know the evidence (falling circulation, publications dropping like flies, advertisers running for the hills) points one way, but the sheer amount of magazines popping up must make this a time of transition as opposed to the end of an era.

Another new magazine to add to ever growing list is Publication, a magazine billed as ‘a biannual periodical produced by street photographers for street photographers’. There’s several smart touches (like the P on the front cover) and a set of 22 prints to accompany the main magazine. (MagCulture)

Take the leap to see detailed images of the magazine.

PSFK recently asked our global network of experts, The Purple List for their thoughts on the future of journalism. We received answers that imagine a variety of possible scenarios, though a common theme emerged which points to a system that combines crowd-sourcing with some kind of editorial curation and professional reporting. If you want to share your ideas about where news reporting is heading, leave your thoughts in the comments.

“One future of journalism is to disintermediate the institutions that now represent them (magazines and newspapers) and create a micropayment system that allows them to get paid directly by the reader. They will have to supply their own editorial direction. They will have to fund their own initiatives, but this model could work well. It depends of course on a micropayment system. And this has been very slow in coming. And this is odd because the person who creates this system gets to be Bezos or Gates. (Good point. Who would want to be Gates.)”

In brief, a design driven approach to creating something new favors a qualitative approach over a data-driven approach. Rather than amassing mounds of data from customer and marketing research, you go out and observe people to understand their lives and needs and how products could fit into them. Folks who embrace design thinking commonly refer to this as building empathy with the customers.

One example of how that could look for newspapers can be seen in this recent post by Michelle McLellan about Carla Savalli, a former assistant managing editor who left the Spokesman-Review in Spokane in October. McLellan writes that Savalli’s “time away from the newsroom has upended the way she views the daily newspaper.” Savalli now sees the newspaper through the eyes of her community, rather than through the newsroom. She’s developed greater empathy for her community. Savalli doesn’t need piles of polls and surveys to understand the community outside the newsroom, because now she’s one of them. Everyone working in a newsroom today needs to have that experience. It requires listening to the community in a very different way.

We live in a world where we are surrounded by all kinds of technicalities. We are bombarded with so many information that sometimes an uncommon problem of information overload arises. With so many media to choose from there is no longer a monopoly of any single particular medium. There is several broadcasting system in today’s world. Television broadcasting, radio and internet broadcasting are to name a few. For television broadcasting components such as antenna, a receiving set and audio and video decoder are of immense importance. Same goes for the radio and internet broadcasting. Interactivity plays a major role in driving these mediums.

Globalization and privatization are the two facets of today’s society. Every country is trying to match up with the pace of other countries fast developing broadcast system. Liberalization has allowed the foreign investors to creep into ones market. The FDI too have allowed the direct investment into the various avenues of the broadcasting system. On one hand it is bring about the financial betterment, on the other it is resulting in too much outside content in broadcasted material. Broadcasted material here includes the contents of the various media. Interaction among the nations have increased manifold. The media sector is now merging into each other to reach heights. Many new ideas are now coming into the making of broadcasting materials. It is truly taking up ones economy to the others economy.
